Schools and colleges collaborate to organise careers guidance
The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) and the Association of Colleges (AoC) have announced that they are to work together in supporting senior leaders in schools and colleges in fulfilling their obligation to students around the provision of careers guidnace. The move follows on from the changes to national careers provision and the statutory regulations regarding the provision of careers advice following the Education Act 2011.
Above all, the protocols state that schools and colleges should work together in a spirit of collaboration rather than competition to ensure that young people have information about all the options available to them locally.
Some of the guidance they sugguest includes:
- Careers coordinators from all the schools and colleges in the area meet regularly and receive updates on the opportunities available from each of the local providers.
- Careers coordinators, in turn, organise briefing sessions for tutors and teachers involved in the careers education and guidance programme.
- Staff working in colleges and workbased learning providers visit schools and/or host visits from school careers staff, and schools support their careers staff to attend these information sessions.
