Geographers are at the heart of many of the solutions to the world’s environmental problems. From the siting of dams to planning the transport systems for big cities, geographers see the big picture of human impact on our planet. Many students don't realise that geography also equips them with a broad range of personal learning and thinking skills such as teamwork, independent enquiry and creative thinking - all highly valued by employers.

Khembe Clarke - Schools Liason Manager
Khembe Clarke is a Schools Liaison Manager for Redstone. "We're working a very big programme - Building Schools for the Future programme... we're responsible for putting all the ICT equipment into schools. So my job is to ensure that I'm liaising with staff in the school". Khembe spent alot of time in church while she was growing up, and says "I think it laid a great foundation for me in terms of my values and kind of understanding my place really in the world".
Julie Stirrup - Transforming Education Officer
Julie Stirrup works for Birmingham City Council as a Transforming Education Officer on the Building Schools for the Future programme. She started out as an RE teacher and her career "snowballed from there". She says, "It's much more a way of life than just a job and the importance is to make a difference to these young people's lives".
Janet Kidner - Head of Sustainability
Janet Kidner is Head of Sustainability for Lend Lease in the UK. "My role is to make sure that (our) buildings are environmentally friendly and also operate in an environmentally friendly way". Janet's first job was an internship for a consulting engineering company. She loves rowing and took part in the world's largest women's rowing race.
Paul Thomas - Managing Director
Paul Thomas is Managing Director for Mycorrhizal Systems Ltd. He says, "Mycorrhizal Systems grows a type of fungus called truffles, so we set up plantations across the world to grow this fungus... (I'm) truffle mad, I think that's a fair representation!".
Nathan Ryder - Skills Trainer and Consultant
Nathan Ryder describes himself as a "freelance skills trainer and consultant... A lot of my time at the minute is spent thinking of and developing short training courses. Since I started on this sort of path it's usually involved doing skills training and workshops for universities and with a special focus on postgraduate researchers".
Matt Lane - Postgraduate Transferable Skills Officer
Matt Lane is the Postgraduate Transferable Skills Officer for the University of Cambridge. He says, "Basically I help and facilitate PhD students and generally postgraduate researchers with their transferable skills".
Jen Reynolds - Senior Project Coordinator
Jen Reynolds is a Senior Project Coordinator and a Hubs Manager for Vitae, a programme set up by CRAC to provide courses for post graduate researchers to attend and to support research staff. She says, "I think the crux of everything that you do is that you should enjoy what you're doing. If you're stuck doing something you don't like doing, change it".
Robin Oram - Head of Building Schools for the Future
Robin Oram is Head of Building Schools for the Future. Despite describing himself as "a kid from the wrong side of the tracks", Robin has worked his way up from trainee within a construction company to project managing the refurbishment of some of the most famous stadiums in the world.
Robert Holt - Director of Education
Robert Holt is the Director of Education at Carillion, "That means I'm responsible for Carillion's education business in the UK whether it be Building Schools for the Future, further education colleges or university in England, Scotland and Wales". Rob left school with few qualifications, but took the opportunities given to him and worked his way up to where he is today.
Chris Grace - Festival Director
Chris Grace is a Festival Director for the Shakespeare Schools Festival, "I run what is now we think the largest youth drama festival in the UK, that next year will enable 700 schools, 14,000 pupils to perform abridged plays in professional theatres". Chris was involved in the launch of Channel 4, and in many successful animated TV programs.
