There is likely to be a big demand for those with construction skills in coming years. Private sector housing and the industrial and commercial sectors will be the main drivers for the industry. Growth in public infrastructure and low carbon will also be increasingly important with an increasing number of ‘green’ contracts and careers routes. These include careers in new eco-friendly energy plants and retrofitting buildings with energy-efficient fabric and technology.

Helen Gray - Land Agent
Helen Gray is a Land Agent for the Forestry Commission. "I look after the land, leasing of the land to third parties, access rights, boundary disputes, title queries, and sort of commercial leases as well, and sort of have mineral leases. We just leave the trees up to the foresters" She says for the future "I've got a professional qualification... that I can take anywhere in the world".
Tony Sparkes - Plant Scheduler
In his 23 years with the company, Tony Sparkes has made the most of his chances. Working his way through different departments he is now a Plant Scheduler. Tony uses IT forecasting tools to ensure the company's product is available for customers when they want it. His role has constantly evolved and this is important to him as he is determined not to settle for a boring work life. He values his family and his work life balance.
Steve Hayward - Paint Mixing Operator
Steve Hayward has seen real variety in his jobs. He let fate decide whether he joined the army or took a graphic design course and then spent 10 years in the army as a chef. After this, he worked in about 20 different jobs until settling as a mixing operator at PPG. He values his work life balance, and now has a satisfying job and time to pursue his interest in art.
Lisa Santillo - HR Manager
Lisa didn't plan to become a Human Resources Manager, but she has worked her way up and she loves it. Having lost her Dad in 2003 and having seen her mum face serious illness, Lisa believes that life is for living and that every opportunity should be grabbed. She makes the most of opportunities at work and in her social life. Skydivivng in Australia is just one of the challenges she has risen to!
Gemma French - HR Administrator
Gemma loved university and studied modules in Human Resources as part of her Psychology degree. This pushed earlier dreams of medicine, nursing and child psychiatry aside. Determined, independent and driven Gemma is relishing her responsibilities as HR administrator with PPG. She has a clear idea of how she might progress. A move to the States for her secondary education, provided Gemma with a stimulating culture shock and left her with a passion for travel.
Richard Hynam - Unit Manager
Richard Hynam is the Manager of Stancombe Quarry near Bristol. He started at the quarry in 1987 as a manual worker and has worked his way up through the ranks to be in charge of a million ton a year quarry. "I was lucky enough to start on the day they blasted in the quarry. And that, for me, was quite exciting. I've now got the pleasure of running my own blasts."
Jermaine Spencer - Carpenter
Jermaine Spencer is a Carpenter at Addenbrookes Hospital. "I like to be asked to do something and be able to see it in my head before I do it. And then after I've done it have a look and see if it's the same thing I saw before in my head. " He has many aspirations for the future, and would like to pass his knowledge on to the next generation.
David McDermott - Maintenance Fitter
Dave McDermott looks after machinery at Tarmac's Stancombe Quarry near Bristol. He originally joined Tarmac after A levels as a laboratory technician. "It was a great feeling to know that I'd be out in the big wide world earning some money."
Luc Riera - Account Manager
Luc Riera is an Account Manager for Tarmac. He is "the face of Tarmac." He deals with the company's customers, selling building materials and making sure their accounts run smoothly. He originally wanted to join the RAF but poor eyesight stopped that.
Andrew Christopher - Logistics Supervisor
Andy Christopher organises the transport of raw materials for Tarmac in Colchester. "If my teachers saw me now I don't know what they would say because I am a very different person to when I was at school because I was so bullied at school. I was the quiet one in the corner whereas I'm far from it now. I'm the outspoken one at the front".
