There is likely to be a big demand for those with construction skills in coming years. Private sector housing and the industrial and commercial sectors will be the main drivers for the industry. Growth in public infrastructure and low carbon will also be increasingly important with an increasing number of ‘green’ contracts and careers routes. These include careers in new eco-friendly energy plants and retrofitting buildings with energy-efficient fabric and technology.

Hayley Miller - Chief Executive
Hayley Miller is the Chief Executive for the Birmingham Local Education Partnership. "I'm tasked with ensuring that we deliver great new buildings for the local children and young people of Birmingham. We have four construction sites that are operational at the moment and I have over 30 projects that are in development". After gaining a Masters at University, Hayley joined the Royal Air Force as an Officer for 5 years, she now enjoys the challenges her job brings daily.
Robert Holt - Director of Education
Robert Holt is the Director of Education at Carillion, "That means I'm responsible for Carillion's education business in the UK whether it be Building Schools for the Future, further education colleges or university in England, Scotland and Wales". Rob left school with few qualifications, but took the opportunities given to him and worked his way up to where he is today.
John Wood - Project Director
John Wood is a Project Director for Bouygues Construction. He says, "It's more important to enjoy what you do and who you work with than anything else... I enjoy going home at the weekends and telling people what I've been doing".
David Swarbrick - Managing Director
David Swarbrick is the Managing Director for Balfour Beatty Education. He says, "I lead the Balfour Beatty team competing to build new schools for the government as part of the Building Schools for the Future initiative".
Colin Hamilton - Associate Director
Colin Hamilton is an Associate Director with Interserve. He has been with the company since 1988, and risen through the ranks from Junior Engineer to Associate Director.
Rob Nicholls - Caretaker / Groundsman
Rob Nicholls is the Caretaker/Groundsman at Fairstead House School, Newmarket. He came here after 37 years as a printer. "It's more enjoyable than being in print. Obviously when you're in print, you're in a factory, you're indoors all the time. But here you're outdoors and you're meeting different people and it's a more relaxed type of job and it's more enjoyable."
Sam MacKenzie - Partner
Sam MacKenzie is the Managing Partner for construction consultants, Davis Langdon. He comes from the Isle of Skye, where teaching, fishing and tourism seemed to be the only options. His granny suggested quantity surveying and he applied for that without really knowing what it was. Now he's in charge of an office which manages 150 quantity surveyors, building surveyors and project managers.
Rhona Downie - Trainee Quantity Surveyor
Rhona Downie is a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at construction consultants, Davis Langdon. She is in the final year of a part time degree and she is also working, which solves the student debt problem. She realises that she is a woman in a traditionally male role. It hasn't caused her any problems yet and she hopes it never does.
Michael Gallacher - Project Manager
Michael Gallacher is a Project Manager for construction consultants, Davis Langdon. He is about to go and work in Libya. He has a degree in law and then he qualified as a quantity surveyor in order to become a project manager. But now he's more philosophical about qualifications. "So everything's really just a stepping stone... We don't want to know how many qualifications you've got, we want to know can you deliver."
Gerry McKenna - Associate, Project Management
Gerry McKenna is an Associate Project Manager with construction consultants, Davis Langdon. His brothers are quantity surveyors, and it was casual work for them when he was a teenager that inspired him to take that path as well.
