There is likely to be a big demand for those with construction skills in coming years. Private sector housing and the industrial and commercial sectors will be the main drivers for the industry. Growth in public infrastructure and low carbon will also be increasingly important with an increasing number of ‘green’ contracts and careers routes. These include careers in new eco-friendly energy plants and retrofitting buildings with energy-efficient fabric and technology.

Chris Tysall - Handyman
Chris Tysall is the Handyman at Glengoyne Distillery - "I do enjoy it, I enjoy getting up in the morning and coming to work, and it's the first job I've ever had that I've enjoyed coming to work".
Scott Delaney - Assistant Construction Manager
Scott Delaney is an Assistant Construction Manager at Bovis Lend Lease. He's been a market trader and a black cab driver, but of all his jobs he realised he liked construction the best, so he went to university and did a degree in construction management.
Simon Vaughan - Senior Project Manager
Simon Vaughan is a Senior Project Manager for Bovis Lend Lease. "I'm the type of person who can't look at paper all day, wants to see some physical tangible reward at the end of the day, and the reward for me isn't financial, it's in seeing the buildings go from - somebody's mind, onto paper, actually onto site and delivered. Quite an exciting job."
David Buzzard - Commercial Manager
David Buzzard is a Commercial Manager for Bovis Lend Lease. He took vocational qualifications in construction but wanted to go further than they would take him so he went to university. "Studied full time, great times, best time of my life.... I knew more than anybody else because I'd already experienced the construction."
William Brand - Contracts Manager
William Brand is the Contracts Manager for lightning conductors at Pendrich Height Services. He applied to be trained in lightning protection without really knowing what it was, but enjoyed being out in the open. He then discovered he got a buzz from working at heights, so the job got even better.
Murray Clark - Contracts Manager
Murray Clark is a Contracts Manager at Pendrich Height Services, a company which employs steeplejacks. He's been a steeplejack himself, and a stonemason. "I think I've done my time of the hard graft and hard work and now I'm reaping the profits, as they say, by being in the office and working."
Richard Horsburgh - Contracts Manager
Richard Horsburgh is a Contracts Manager at Pendrich Height Services. He's a steeplejack who uses ropes to get to "problematic areas". For him it's a way of making a career out of his hobby, mountaineering. He has been a BT engineer and run his own climbing shop, but there wasn't enough actual climbing in either of those for him.
Mark Williams - Contracts Manager
Mark Williams is a Contracts Manager for Pendrich Height Services. He's responsible for a team of steeplejacks. He wanted to be a steeplejack when he left school but he didn't know whether he'd be able to cope with the heights. "Everybody stands back and looks up watching as you're working away. It's absolutely great!"
Paul Campbell - Quality and Safety Manager
Paul Campbell is the Quality and Safety Manager for Pendrich Height Services. It's a key job in this company because he makes sure that the steeplejacks do their jobs as safely as possible. He came to this job after twenty two years in the printing industry.
Rita Patel - Business and Community Development Manager
Rita Patel is the Business and Community Development Manager for Catalyst Lend Lease. "My job involves ensuring there is societal benefits from our build initiatives". She says, "I think it's OK not to know what you want to do at the moment... but I think it's about grabbing every opportunity that you can really. And also believing that you can do it".
